영어공부 67탄 (hope . vs wish)

형태에 따라 의미가 다른 wish

1) wish 주어 + 동사 : 주로 ~ 할텐데, ! 하면 좋을텐데, ~ 했을텐데 로 해석

조건) 1. 우리가 원하는 상황 이지만 현재 상황과 반대 되는 상황일때 " opposite of the current reality"

        2. 아쉬움을 표현할때

 

I wish today were Friday. = I wish it were Friday.

A: Could you help me ( out) with something?

B: I wish I could, but I can't.

*help 사람 (out) with 대상? ~에 있어 도움을 주다

Could you help me out with the presentation?

Could you help me out with my resume?

I wish you were here.

I wish things were different.

 

2) wish 명사 는 뭔가를 바라는 hope와 비슷해요.

We wish you a merry christmas. = We hope you have a merry christmas.

Wish me luck. = Please hope that I have good luck.

I called to wish you luck at the conference.

Good luck with Elizabeths Vargas, not that you need it.

Good luck, not that you need it.

Nonetheless, I wish you all the best in your efforts.

I wish you the best.

I wish you the very best.

And I wish you the very best of luck.

 

3) wish to=want

There are things I wish to say.

I don't wish to discuss it further.

Exactly, what happened? It's complicated. and I don't wish to discuss it.

I wish to speak to the manager.

 

cf) wish to (~하고 싶다) 는  hope ( ~ 하길 바래) 와 달라요.

I wish to see her.  그녀를 뵙고 싶습니다.

I hope to see her. (바램) 그녀를 뷥수 있길 바래요.

 

hope ~ 하면 좋겠다/~하길 바래

I hope you're having a great day.

I hope you enjoyed your lunch.

When they are literally on their deathbeds,  I wish I hadn't worked so hard.
