영어공부 64탄(shame)

아쉽고 딱한 일이 있을땐 It's shame.

It's a shame that for so many people, learning stops when we finish high school or when we finsih college.

Shame은 일상회화에선'수치스러움/창피함' 이란 의미 보다' 딱한/아쉬움' 이란 의미로 더 자주 쓰여요.

1) 우리에게 익숙한 '수치스러움'의 shame

*shame on you 부끄러운줄 알아/그럼 안돼

used to say that someone should feel guilty or embarrassed becasue of something they have done

*말투에 따라 상대를 진지하게 혼낼때 또는 가볍게 지적할때 쓰여요.

혼낼때: what;s wrong with you? Shame on you.

인종차별 발언을 한 친구에게: Shame on you.

 근데 솔직히 미국인에게 정색하고 쓸일은 많진 않겠죠.

정색하고 Shame on you  (부끄러운줄 알아)

장난치듯 shame on you 에이 그럼 안돼

2) 회화에서 휠씬 더 자주 쓰이는 shame: 딱한/아쉬운/안타까운일

*롱맨영영: It's a shame/what a shame 

spoken used when you wish a situation was different, and you feel sad or disappointed.

* 뒤에 that 절로 구체적으로 아쉽게나 딱한점을 애기해도 돼요.

It's a shame you can't come.

It's a shame you have to leave so soon.

or

It's a shame you can'ts stay for dinner.

ex) What a shame you can't stay and have dinner with Mitch and me, and the children.

It's a shame you didn't get accepted.

It's a shame it didn't work out, Marge.

* 아쉽고 딱한, 애석한 일이 있을땐 It's a shame.

 

* ( 내 뜻대로 되지 않을때 짜증나고 ) 답답할땐,  It's frustrating.

ex) I get that this is frustrating, okay?

 

*창피하고 민망할땐:  It's embarrassing.

* (치욕스러운 정도로 심하게 창피하고) 굴욕적일땐: It's humiliating.

ex) It's painful, and it's humiliating.

 

*뭔가 말 속상하게, 마음이 상하게 할땐,  It's upsetting.

메리엄 웹사전:  mentally or emotionally troubling or disturbing. causing feelings of worry or anxiety.

ex) It's very upsetting.

 

*상황이 달랐으면 하며 아쉽고 안타까운 마음을 표현 할때 : It's shame.
